Lamu County could be sitting on valuable mineral wealth, with the national government stepping up geological surveys to establish the potential of titanium, limestone and barite deposits.

Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho says the exploration is part of efforts to unlock Kenya’s untapped mineral resources, attract investment and generate new economic opportunities.

Speaking during a meeting with Lamu Governor Issa Timamy, Joho also outlined government plans to strengthen the fisheries sector through investments in landing sites, cold-storage facilities, fish processing and market access.

Governor Timamy pledged the county’s support in facilitating permits, community engagement and coordination of projects linked to the Lamu Port.

The government says closer collaboration with the county will be crucial in turning Lamu’s mineral, fisheries, shipping and blue-economy potential into jobs, investment and improved livelihoods.
