The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) arrested six suspects and seized a substantial amount of cannabis in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County. The raid, conducted on Sunday night, July 27, 2025, marks a pivotal moment in the government’s intensified efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal drugs across the country.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a stern warning to law enforcement officers suspected of aiding the drug trade, signaling a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption within the ranks. “We will not hesitate to take action against any officer found complicit in these illegal activities,” Murkomen stated during a press briefing on Monday, July 28, 2025.
The operation in Kiminini, carried out in collaboration with the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), Administration Police, and local police, followed weeks of surveillance on a suspected drug den. Authorities believe the seized cannabis, valued at over Ksh3 million, was intended for distribution across several towns in the region. This raid comes just hours before the Jukwaa la Usalama Trans Nzoia forum, underscoring the urgency and scale of the government’s anti-drug campaign.
NACADA’s CEO, Dr. Anthony Omerikwa, emphasized the importance of community involvement and the need for rehabilitation programs to address the root causes of drug abuse. “This is not just about arrests and seizures; it’s about protecting our youth and rebuilding lives,” Omerikwa said in a separate statement.
The operation and subsequent warnings from high-ranking officials reflect a broader strategy to tackle the drug menace in Kenya, which has been a persistent challenge affecting public health and safety. The government’s resolve was further highlighted by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during the burial service of former NACADA CEO Victor Okioma, where he reiterated the commitment to eradicating drug abuse.
As the nation grapples with these issues, the crackdown in Kiminini serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against drugs and the critical role of law enforcement and community cooperation in this fight. The government’s multi-faceted approach, combining enforcement with rehabilitation and public awareness, aims to create a safer and healthier environment for all Kenyans.
