Ms Kananu was shot dead on July 20, 2026 by armed men moments after she had closed her shop within Isiolo town. Her brother, who had picked the deceased on a motorbike also sustained gunshot wounds and is receiving treatment.

According to the family, the security officials were yet to issue them with any official briefing despite earlier assurances that they were share an update on the progress.

While dismissing claims on social media that the deceased was involved in trading illegal drugs, her sister Regina Lichira noted the prolonged silence had only deepened the family’s pain and raised concerns over the pace of the investigations.

“My sister had established a reputable business for over 20 years. Had she been selling drugs, those she worked with would have known,” she said calling on investigators to share facts that would counter speculations.

Her sentiments were echoed by the late’s brother Joshua Mutabari and community leader Kezia Karimi who maintained that even if the allegations were true, she deserved justice.

“No one deserves to be killed for engaging in any kind of business. Our sister was innocent and as a family we demand justice,” said Mutabari.

According to Ms Kezia, the government had faied to honour the promise of providing updates noting the silence had eroded public confidence in the investigations.
