A section of Mombasa MCAs have raised concerns over poor service delivery and stalled development projects across the county, demanding answers and concrete action from the county government.
According to the ward representatives, local education centres, water projects, fisheries, healthcare facilities, social protection schemes and waste collection sectors were in deplorable states despite budget allocations to ensure they serve residents adequately.
Led by Mwakirunge Ward MCA Hamisi Mwinyi Mtoto the MCAs questioned the condition of Digirikani ECDE Centre saying learners had occupied the facility despite inadequate water, poor sanitation, drainage challenges and flooding of classrooms during rains.
The MCA also sought details on water pan projects implemented in Mwakirunge over the past two financial years, including their costs, contractors, completion status and measures being taken to address delays.
His Shanzu counterpart Allen Katana sought a comprehensive update on Blue Economy, agriculture, fisheries and livestock projects implemented across Mombasa since 2022, including their funding, locations, progress, challenges and benefits to residents.
Other MCAs raised concerns over healthcare services, with Juma Mwalimu Kambi seeking an update on cancer screening and prevention, while Fadhili Mwalimu called for details on plans to upgrade Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital and Port Reitz Hospital.
Tudor representative Samir Bhaloo also sought clarification on the implementation of hospital bill exemptions for children aged five years and below.
Other concerns raised by the legislators were the implementation of the county integrated waste management plan noting the city was in a deplorable state as far as waste management is concerned.
Nominated MCA Florence Kachumbo raised concerns over social protection programmes for vulnerable and marginalised residents.
The ward representatives speaking during their normal house businesses maintained that the concerns raised were aimed at strengthening accountability, improving service delivery and ensuring equitable development across Mombasa County.
