President William Ruto has called for unity after the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) suffered a landslide defeat in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
Speaking at State House, the President urged leaders to respect the electorate’s choice and focus on service delivery. Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru won the seat with 35,440 votes against UDA’s Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who garnered 5,450.
Meanwhile, Gatundu North MP Elijah Kururia has criticised Ol Kalou voters following the UDA defeat, saying the constituency had benefited from numerous government development projects. In a Facebook post, he urged residents to return gas cylinders distributed under government programmes.
At the same time, ODM leader Oburu Odinga called on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to embrace peace after the by-election victory, saying the outcome should put to rest claims of possible electoral manipulation.
Elsewhere, leaders from the Mt Kenya East region reaffirmed their support for President Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, insisting the Ol Kalou result does not reflect the region’s political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In other news, a 22-year-old National Youth Service serviceman, Johnstone Mutuku, drowned while bathing in a dam in Yatta, Machakos County. Police have launched investigations, with preliminary findings indicating the incident was accidental.
