Mombasa has employed 12 young boxers as professional coaches, in a move that highlights the growing role of sports in creating jobs, nurturing talent and empowering Kenya’s youth.
The 12 boxers were competitively recruited by the County Public Service Board and have received employment letters that will see them take up coaching roles across social halls in the county.
The initiative is part of efforts to strengthen grassroots sports by providing young people with safe spaces to train, develop discipline and build their sporting careers.

Beyond talent development, the programme is expected to create a new pathway for athletes to earn a livelihood while giving back to the sporting community by mentoring the next generation of boxers.
The initiative also underscores the potential of sports as a tool for addressing youth unemployment and keeping young people away from crime, drugs and other harmful influences.
With Kenya renowned for producing athletes who compete successfully on the national and international stage, investment in grassroots coaching and sporting facilities could play a critical role in identifying and developing future champions.

The Mombasa initiative could therefore provide a model for other counties seeking to combine sports development, job creation and youth empowerment.
Through the employment of the 12 coaches, Mombasa is demonstrating that sports can be more than competition—it can be a source of jobs, discipline, opportunity and national talent development.
