Mombasa is among 15 counties set to receive major investments in specialized healthcare under a new National Government initiative aimed at transforming medical services and bringing advanced treatment closer to Kenyans.
The county will benefit from a KSh6.2 billion Level 6 hospital in Jomvu, following an Intergovernmental Partnership Agreement between the National and County Governments to construct and equip modern medical facilities across the country.
Mombasa Governor AbdullSwamad Shariff Nassir joined fellow governors in a meeting with Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale to finalize the agreement, paving the way for the rollout of the projects.
The proposed Jomvu facility will be built on 30 acres, cover approximately 89,000 square metres and have a capacity of 1,000 beds, including super-specialized medical services.
Groundbreaking is scheduled for October 2026, with the hospital expected to serve residents of Mombasa and patients from across the Coast region.
The wider programme is expected to strengthen Kenya’s healthcare system by expanding specialized services, easing pressure on existing referral hospitals and reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for advanced treatment.
Governor Nassir has welcomed the initiative, describing cooperation between the National and County Governments as critical to delivering major public projects and improving services for citizens.
He has also thanked President William Ruto for what he described as continued favourable consideration of Mombasa in national government development programmes.
The Jomvu hospital is expected to become a major pillar of Kenya’s broader push to modernize healthcare infrastructure and make specialized medical services more accessible across the country.
