In the heart of Mombasa, a coastal city rich in culture and history, one woman has emerged as a symbol of compassion, resilience, and community care. Amina Abdalla, founder of the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network and the Mombasa Mental Rescue Center, is dedicating her life to rescuing mentally ill individuals who have been abandoned by society. Through these initiatives, she offers free mental
treatment, shelter, and vocational training, giving those who are most vulnerable a chance to rebuild their lives. Amina’s story is one of unwavering philanthropy—giving not only her time and financial resources but also her knowledge and boundless empathy to support the mentally challenged.
A Moment That Changed Everything: The Girl Who Sparked a Lifelong Mission
Amina’s journey into mental health advocacy with a life-altering experience. She recalls, with raw emotion, the moment she encountered a young girl who had been reduced to a state of extreme vulnerability by untreated mental illness. The girl was wandering the streets of Mombasa, naked and confused, as onlookers jeered and threw stones at her.
“I remember standing there in shock, unable to understand how people could be so cruel,” Amina recounts. “I knew I couldn’t just watch. I had to do something.”

Without hesitation, Amina intervened. She offered the girl her shawl to cover herself and took her to a nearby mental hospital. Recognizing the severity of her condition, Amina personally sponsored the girl’s treatment, staying by her side throughout the difficult recovery process. “I didn’t know her, but she was someone’s daughter, someone’s sister. How could I not help?” Amina reflects.
The girl’s treatment lasted for months, during which Amina became more determined than ever to make a difference. When the girl finally recovered, Amina took it upon herself to reunite her with her estranged family, who had long given up hope of ever seeing their loved one well again. This deeply emotional reunion left an indelible mark on Amina’s heart, sparking her commitment to help others facing similar struggles.

“It was in that moment I realized how many others like her were out there—lost, forgotten, and in desperate need of help,” Amina says. “I couldn’t turn a blind eye. That’s when I knew this was my purpose.”
The Birth of the Mombasa Mental Rescue Center: A Lifeline for the Forgotten
Driven by that powerful encounter, Amina founded the Mombasa Mental Rescue Center. The center operates with a holistic approach to mental health care, recognizing that healing is multifaceted. Patients brought to the center receive immediate medical attention from a team of dedicated healthcare professionals. The center provides more than just medical care; it offers psychological counseling and long-term rehabilitation, helping individuals reclaim their lives.

One of the core elements of the center’s program is vocational training, which Amina passionately advocates for. She believes that economic independence is essential for sustained recovery. The center offers courses in various trades such as computer skills, tailoring, welding, and cosmetology. These programs empower individuals to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose, equipping them with the skills needed to secure employment.
“Our goal isn’t just to treat people and send them back out into the world,” Amina explains. “We want to give them the tools to thrive and stand on their own feet.”
Transformative Success Stories: Mbaraka.
Since its inception, the Mombasa Mental Rescue Center has touched the lives of over 1,200 individuals. A story of Mbaraka, demonstrate the life-saving impact of Amina’s work and the profound effect mental health recovery can have on individuals and their communities.
Mbaraka Punga, once a skilled long-distance driver, saw his life spiral into chaos due to mental illness. Homeless and isolated from his family, Mbaraka was found wandering the streets of the Bomu area of Mombasa in a state of despair.
“When we found Mbaraka, he was in a dire situation—confused and barely able to communicate. He had lost everything, from his job to his connection with his loved ones,” Amina recalls.
Brought to the Mombasa Mental Rescue Center, Mbaraka received comprehensive medical care, psychological counseling, and, most importantly, compassionate support. Over time, he gradually recovered. “It wasn’t easy, but Amina and her team never gave up on me. They gave me hope when I had none,” says Mbaraka.
After months of treatment, Mbaraka was able to reunite with his family, who had thought they might never see him well again. He also returned to his work as a long-distance driver—a role that restored both his livelihood and his sense of self. “Getting back behind the wheel was like reclaiming my life. I feel whole again,” Mbaraka shares with a grateful smile.
Amina adds, “Seeing Mbaraka return to his profession was such a proud moment for all of us. His journey from the streets to recovery shows the incredible resilience of the human spirit, with the right support.”
Sustaining the Mission: Strengthening the Foundation for the Future
The Mombasa Mental Rescue Center, under Amina Abdalla’s leadership, continues to provide vital services to individuals struggling with mental health challenges. While the center’s work has been transformative, sustaining its impact requires careful planning and support. Currently, the center operates on a flexible model, relying on contributions from well-wishers and Amina’s personal resources. Although this has allowed the center to offer life-saving care to over 1,200 individuals, there’s a need to secure more consistent funding to maintain and expand these services.
“Our goal is not just to help people in crisis, but to offer them a path to recovery and reintegration into society,” says Amina. “We’ve made incredible progress with the resources we have, but we’re committed to doing even more.”
Despite financial constraints, the center is fully operational, offering comprehensive treatment, counseling, and vocational training. The commitment to innovation is also evident in the wide range of services provided. For example, patients receive tailored care plans that address not only their mental health needs but also offer skill-building programs like tailoring, computer literacy, and welding to help them regain independence.

The center also engages with the broader community to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, and Amina’s work has fostered partnerships with local businesses that offer job opportunities to patients once they are ready to re-enter the workforce.
Looking ahead, Amina remains optimistic. “We’re building a foundation for lasting change. The support we’ve received so far has allowed us to make a real difference, and with the right partners, we can grow and reach even more people.”
A Community’s Lifeline: Giving Back to Mombasa

Amina’s work is a prime example of community giving in its purest form. She has poured her heart, time, and personal finances into this cause, refusing to give up on the people society has forgotten. Her determination has inspired others, from patients and their families to local business owners, to join her mission. By partnering with organizations and individuals, Amina hopes to create a sustainable future for the center.
“My goal is simple,” Amina concludes. “No one should suffer in silence. We need to stand together as a community, lifting up those who need it most. That’s how we create lasting change.”
