A police officer is in custody after he was found in possession of 20 kilograms of suspected cannabis sativa valued at about KSh400,000 during a raid at his residence in Dagoretti Sub-County, Nairobi, in a major anti-narcotics operation.
The National Police Service (NPS) said the arrest followed a tip-off from members of the public, prompting officers from Muthangari Police Station to conduct an intelligence-led operation on Thursday.
During the search, officers recovered two bags containing six bales of suspected cannabis sativa wrapped in yellow tape.
He was immediately taken into custody and is being processed ahead of his arraignment in court to face narcotics-related charges.
The arrest has drawn attention as the suspect is a police officer entrusted with enforcing the law, underscoring the National Police Service’s ongoing efforts to crack down on drug trafficking and other criminal activities.
“The National Police Service reaffirms its commitment to upholding the rule of law without fear or favour. Any person, regardless of status or position, found to be engaging in criminal activities will be subjected to due process,” the NPS said in a statement.
Investigators are now working to establish the source of the suspected cannabis, its intended destination and whether the officer was acting alone or as part of a wider drug trafficking network.
The police urged members of the public to continue sharing information on suspected criminal activities, saying community cooperation remained critical in the fight against narcotics and other organised crimes across the country.
